(ANSA) – ROME, 01 JAN – Assisted suicide is now legal in Austria. The new law guarantees criminal protection for those who “help seriously ill people to decide to die with dignity” and recognizes the right of people to decide to voluntarily end their suffering.
On the other hand, however, it defines the criteria for accessing the assisted end of life. This possibility is foreseen only for dying patients and those suffering from very serious pathologies without the possibility of recovery who will be able to receive a lethal drug through pharmacies. Minors are explicitly excluded. At the same time, the expansion of the network of palliative centers is planned.
The application must be submitted to a notary or to the ‘patients’ ombudsman’. Two medical consultations are needed, one of which must be specialized in palliative care. The patient’s ability to understand and will must also be documented. In the event that one of the two doctors has doubts, a psychiatrist or psychologist should also be involved.
