(ANSA) – TOBRUK, 03 JAN – The elections in Libya of 24 December have been postponed “due to legal, political and security problems”, obstacles that if not overcome risk making the date of 24 January impracticable: said the president of the Libyan Electoral Commission, Imad al-Sayeh, in front of the Parliament meeting in Tobruk.
The manager cited the disagreement between the parties in the field on the ballots for over a hundred candidates. To complicate the process, also the high number of appeals on the candidacies, 26, after the rejection of the Commission. A situation “which moreover would have undermined the ability to detect electoral fraud”.
On the security front, “despite an ambitious plan, the authorities have clashed with the reality on the ground”, he stressed, stating that if these obstacles persist it will be impossible to hold elections on January 24, as proposed to Parliament by the Commission itself. (HANDLE).
