Covid: Brazil, carnival canceled in over ten cities

(ANSA) – SAN PAOLO, 06 JAN – New defections for the carnival in Brazil: even the municipality of Olinda, in the State of Pernambuco, has recently decided to cancel the scheduled events due to the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

“We have taken the decision, collectively, to cancel the largest carnival in the world. We will not be irresponsible in putting anyone’s life at risk. This is the most important thing,” said Lupercio Carlos do Nascimento, mayor of Olinda, declared patrimony. historical-cultural by Unesco and whose carnival is one of the largest in the country.

In Sao Paulo, the country’s most populous megalopolis, the authorities should decide today whether to cancel the ‘blocos de rua’ (neighborhood music groups) parades, as already happened in Rio de Janeiro.

In the latter metropolis it was decided to just keep the parades of the official samba schools, broadcast every year worldwide, and the same could happen in Sao Paulo.

Ten other capitals have already canceled the events related to the carnival: Belem, Belo Horizonte, Campo Grande, Cuiabà, Curitiba, Florianopolis, Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador and Sao Luis.
