Explosion in a canteen in China, at least 20 trapped

(ANSA) – BEIJING, 07 JAN – At least 20 people were trapped after an explosion in the canteen of a building that houses government offices in the Chinese city of Chongqing in the southwest of the country, in the district of Wulong.

The explosion occurred shortly after noon causing several collapses inside the building and is suspected to have been caused by a gas leak. Authorities have sent about 260 rescuers and 50 vehicles to the scene, according to state media, according to which the causes of the explosion are now being investigated.

Nine people were rescued, while the Chinese news agency Xinhua reports that some of the injured have been taken to hospital.

The rescue operations, the Chinese media reported, citing local authorities, are still ongoing. It is estimated that around twenty people are still trapped. (HANDLE).
