The coronavirus continues to mutate and create new strains. Now scientists from Cyprus have announced the discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus. They named their discovery “Deltacron”.
This was reported by the TASS agency.
What is known
It is reported that Deltacron is a hybrid of Delta and Omicron strains. According to the Cypriot virologist Leondios Gostrigis, the new variant has a genetic basis like the delta strain, but a number of its mutations are the same as that of the omicron strain.
According to the Cypriot channel Sigma Live, the first patients infected with such a virus have been found on the island. Almost half of them required hospitalization.
“Of the 25 patients with the new mutation, 11 were hospitalized. More often, the new mutation was found in inpatients than in outpatients.“, – said the virologist.
According to the scientist, it is not yet clear what kind of proliferation ability Deltacron has.
