Brazil, bad weather gives no respite to Minas Gerais, 25 dead

(ANSA) – BRASILIA, 13 JAN – In Brazil, the number of victims of the floods that hit the south-eastern state of Minas Gerais, where several thousand people have already had to leave their homes, has risen to 25 since yesterday.

In the northern town of Claro dos Pocoes, a man died today after being run over by the water while trying to cross a bridge on horseback.

In Ouro Preto, famous for its historical heritage, a landslide of earth and mud destroyed a neo-colonial building from the 1800s, the first in the city, fortunately leaving no injuries.

Another of the most affected locations is Brumadinho, where, on January 25, 2019, the collapse of a dam caused 270 deaths.

According to the latest report from the Civil Protection, Minas currently has 374 cities in a state of emergency and 30.5 thousand displaced persons. Yesterday the numbers were 341 and 29 thousand respectively.
