Burma: hundreds of monks fleeing the fighting

(ANSA) – YANGONG, JAN 16 – Hundreds of Buddhist monks have fled from two large cities in eastern Burma, adding to the thousands displaced who have fled their homes due to intense fighting between the military and rebel groups opposed to the coup February 2021 which ousted the leader Aung San Suu Kyi. It was learned from witnesses on the spot.

The mass protests that followed the coup were bloodily suppressed with the killing of over 1,400 people, while dozens of rebel groups rose to oppose the regime.

The city of Loikaw in East Kayah state was the scene of intense fighting last week and the United Nations estimates that nearly 90,000 people have fled. According to local NGOs, there are over 170,000. by local NGOs.

“More than half of Loikaw’s population is displaced,” the UN said. “It was impossible for us to stay there,” said one monk, adding that about 30 monasteries were emptying.
