Dominican Republic: brawl in prison, 3 dead and 9 injured

(ANSA) – SANTO DOMINGO, JANUARY 17 – A fight between prisoners that broke out yesterday morning in the La Victoria prison on the outskirts of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, ended after a few hours with a death toll of three dead and nine injured. The newspaper Diario Libre writes it.

The spokesman for the National Police, Diego Pesqueira, for his part assured that the authorities have regained control of the situation in the penitentiary, while the Ministry of the Interior has ordered the deployment of an additional contingent of agents to maintain order.

Pesquera added that an investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office has already started to establish the circumstances that caused the battle between the inmates, which ended tragically. The newspaper finally reported unofficial information that an inmate identified with the nickname ‘Crab’ broke into the victims’ cells along with other inmates with knives and firearms. (HANDLE).
