Uruguay: sultry heat, 400,000 chickens died in 3 days

(ANSA) – MONTEVIDEO, 17 JAN – A wave of high temperatures has caused severe inconvenience in Uruguay in recent days and caused the death of almost 400,000 hens in three days. The Association of Poultry Producers ‘Sud’ (Apas) denounced this yesterday. In this regard, the president of Apas, Joaquín Fernández, told the Subrayado news portal that this massacre affects between ten and 12% of the national production of this sector.

A preliminary estimate of the damage was evaluated by the specialists in the loss of about one and a half million dollars and an increase, at least temporary, in the price of eggs. But there will be no supply problems, Fernández pointed out, because before the death of the hens there was an overproduction that had increased the stocks. It has been learned that the authorities of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP) and those of the National Emergency System (Sinae) will analyze the situation together with the producers. Among the points that will be evaluated are investments in cooling systems to prevent this from happening again in the future. Finally, the president of APAS said that this is an “absolutely unprecedented” event for Uruguay, a sign of climate change underway. “I have been working in this sector for 43 years – he assured – and I have never experienced such a thing”.
