after the G7 agreement, negotiations continue at the OECD

After the agreement reached at the G7 on a global taxation of multinationals, negotiations continue this week at the OECD. Representatives of the 139 countries involved must agree on the amount and terms. But not all have the same interests, and behind the scenes, the discussions are intense.

After the historic agreement reached at the G7 on a global taxation of multinationals, negotiations are continuing. This week, intense discussions are taking place at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), based in Paris. The representatives of the 139 countries involved, who communicate by videoconference, must now agree on the rate of this tax and its terms.

Outside of official meetings, many negotiations take place behind the scenes. So on Wednesday there were sticking points with Turkey. The French Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire therefore made a call to his Turkish counterpart. On Thursday morning, he also had the Poles and Koreans online.

Hungary and Ireland oppose this tax

Because in this matter, there are conflicting interests, even within the European Union. Hungary and Ireland, which have made tax competition one of the driving forces behind their attractiveness, are clearly against it. The 15% rate proposed by the United States is not unanimous either, including in the American Congress. According to information from Europe 1, the discussions would go rather well with China, which was among the countries to be convinced.

In any case, a large majority of states should agree on Thursday evening to finalize the text by October.
