Portugal, today 300,000 to vote to avoid gatherings on the 30th

(ANSA) – LISBON, JAN 23 – Ballot boxes open today in Portugal, a week before the general elections scheduled for January 30, to reduce crowding next Sunday in the middle of the Covid pandemic: over 300 thousand voters registered to vote and polling stations will open at 8:00 (9:00 in Italy).

The elections were brought forward after Parliament rejected the socialist minority government budget bill. According to polls, the Socialists are still in the lead but their advantage over rivals from the center-right is dwindling.

Prime Minister Antonio Costa, who has led two consecutive socialist minority governments since 2015, is among the voters who will vote today. According to a poll by Radio Renascenna, the socialists can count on about 38% of the votes, against just over 30% of the Social Democratic Party (PSD, center-right), the main opposition party: Costa, therefore, risks once again to find themselves without a majority in Parliament.
