Thailand yesterday became the first Asian nation to approve the de facto decriminalization of marijuana, although authorities have left a gray area on its recreational use. The international media reported it.
Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced that the Narcotics Control Council has approved the removal of cannabis from the ministry’s list of controlled drugs. The measure will now have to be signed by the minister and will take effect 120 days after its publication in the government’s Official Gazette. The initiative follows the removal of cannabis last month from the list of drugs considered illegal in the country.
However, Time reports, law enforcement officials and legal experts contacted by the Associated Press news agency said it is still unclear whether marijuana possession will no longer be subject to arrest. In fact, due to a jungle of related laws, the production and possession of marijuana remain regulated for the moment, leaving the legal status of the recreational use of marijuana in a gray area.
