Partygate: Gray report and police investigation, BoJo on grill

(ANSA) – LONDON, JANUARY 26 – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is on the grill while he awaits the publication of the report on the partygate after the independent investigation conducted by senior official Sue Gray. Report that could have devastating effects on the Conservative Prime Minister’s leadership, particularly if you add to the police investigation launched by Scotland Yard into the same facts, the parties in Downing Street and other institutional venues held in 2020-21 in alleged violation of the anti-Covid restrictions in effect then. Among the acts envisaged by the Met Police there is also a hearing of the prime minister himself, another destabilizing element for his already compromised image. The Gray report has not yet been presented in Downing Street and it will be up to the premier himself to decide whether to make it public in whole or in part. A decisive moment to understand the climate within the majority with respect to Johnson’s future is represented by today’s Question Time (at 13.30 Italian) in the House of Commons, in which the opposition will certainly come forward again asking for his resignation. Meanwhile, the foreign minister, Liz Truss, said she supported him “100%”. Truss, speaking on BBC television, said all sides should be more focused on issues such as Russia’s threat to invade Ukraine.

But he acknowledged with respect to the partygate: “There must clearly be a change in culture. The premier said that mistakes were made, he apologized for what happened.” (HANDLE).
