Sweden: crows ‘recruited’ to collect cigarette butts

Singular initiative of a company in Sweden to clean up the cities of cigarette butts abandoned on the street and to cut costs. A startup from Södertälje, near Stockholm has in fact ‘recruited’ crows for this job. The Guardian writes it stating that wild birds are able to do their job by receiving a little food for each butt they deposit in a custom machine designed by the startup.
“They are wild birds that participate without being forced,” said Christian Günther-Hanssen, the founder of Corvid Cleaning, the company that is testing the pilot project.
The Keep Sweden Tidy Foundation says more than 1 billion cigarette butts are left on the streets of Sweden each year, accounting for 62% of all waste. Södertälje spends SEK 20 million, £ 16 million, on street cleaning. Günther-Hanssen estimates that his method could save at least 75% of the costs associated with taking back cigarette butts in the city.
