“The rights of Afghan women and girls must be a priority in humanitarian aid. Our commitment is to the people of Afghanistan, not to their rulers.” This was stated by the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, speaking at the high-level conference on Afghan women held today and tomorrow in the European institution, underlining how the Parliament “supports humanitarian corridors to the country for food, water sanitation and medicines to the population “.
“The immediate needs of Afghan women and girls must be prioritized in the context of humanitarian aid – explained Metsola – so that those who have left Afghanistan can continue their education in other countries. We encourage the development of innovative ways to empower Afghan women, including by providing scholarships to study in European schools and universities “.
Afghan women “with their talent, devotion, love for their country have contributed to a vibrant Afghan society and culture: now they are humiliated, starving, threatened and many have fled into exile even though most of them do not she could escape. Now with fear and desperation in their future they continue to fight for it. ” After the return of the Taliban to power, “the situation for Afghan women is extremely worrying”, underlined Maltese politics.
Thus today’s event in the EU Parliament is “to give a voice to Afghan women and girls in our home and to honor and support the human rights work carried out by Afghan women finalists in the 2021 Sakharov prize”.
After Metsola’s speech, the participants of the high-level conference heard a heartfelt appeal by Angelina Jolie, UNHCR ambassador, on the Afghan situation.
