Erdogan, ‘Cooperating with Israel to bring gas to Europe’

(ANSA) – ISTANBUL, 04 FEB – “We could use Israel’s natural gas in our country and in addition to this we could also work together to bring it to Europe”. This was stated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to the Anadolu agency, adding that he wants to speak directly about this with his Israeli counterpart Isaac Herzog during his visit to Ankara scheduled for mid-March. “I hope this issue will be on the agenda during Herzog’s visit to Turkey,” said Erdogan.

The Turkish president had mentioned the hypothesis of a cooperation on gas distribution with Israel in recent weeks after the US withdrawal from EastMed, a gas pipeline project between Israel, Cyprus and Greece that has never been realized. According to Erdogan, Washington has lost interest because it views the project as not being economically viable.

The Turkish president said that with the previous administration of former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a cooperation on gas between Turkey and Israel had already been discussed even if the dialogue was then interrupted.

After the election of Herzog and the new Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Erdogan expressed his intention to seek reconciliation in the relationship with Israel that was complicated during Netanyahu’s administration. Herzog’s visit to Ankara scheduled for mid-March “could open a new chapter in relations between Turkey and Israel,” said the Turkish president. (HANDLE).
