(ANSA) – JALALABAD, 07 FEB – At least twenty people were killed by an avalanche as they were crossing a remote mountain pass from Afghanistan to Pakistan. A Taliban official said so. Dozens of Afghans illegally cross Pakistan every day across the mountain border in search of work or to purchase essential trade goods.
Najibullah Hassan Abdal, head of information for the eastern province of Kunar, said rescuers have arrived at the scene. “Nineteen bodies have already been recovered”, he specified.
Illegal trafficking across the Pakistan-Afghanistan border has skyrocketed since the Taliban returned to power in August, plunging the country into a major crisis with tens of thousands of people out of work.
Deadly avalanches are common in the area. In 2015, more than 250 people were killed across the country in a series of devastating avalanches. (HANDLE).
