Canada, Trudeau to truckers: ‘enough with the siege of Ottawa’

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has urged the hundreds of truckers who have been blocking downtown Ottawa for more than a week to protest anti-Covid health measures to end their mobilization, after a request for help from the mayor of the Canadian capital.

“It is necessary for the mobilization to stop,” Trudeau said at the end of a week of isolation due to Covid, during an urgently organized debate in the House of Commons. “Canadians know that the only way out is to continue listening to science,” the premier said, promising that “the federal government will respond”, without however announcing new measures, requested by Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.

Watson yesterday asked the federal state to send 1,800 additional police officers and a mediator to end the siege of Ottawa, where it had declared a state of emergency the day before.
