After 2 years, the Lourdes grotto reopens to pilgrims

(ANSA) – PARIS, 08 FEB – After two years of closure due to the health crisis linked to the coronavirus, the Lourdes grotto, in south-western France, will reopen to the public starting Friday. According to what the leaders of the famous sanctuary report, pilgrims will be able to enter the Grotto, the so-called rock of Massabielle, “under the feet of the Virgin Mary, Immaculate Conception, touch the rock and approach the source”.

The closure of the famous cave where the Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 had a negative impact on the level of attendance of the second hotel city in France. Lourdes has 14,000 inhabitants and 90% of its economy is linked to tourism. Before the pandemic, many sick people also went to Lourdes in search of healing, out of a total of 3.5 million annual visitors.
