Gb: England’s oldest pub closes due to pandemic

(ANSA) – LONDON, 08 FEB – He is one of the most illustrious ‘victims’ among the locals who had to close their doors in the United Kingdom due to the coronavirus pandemic. This is the ‘Ye Olde Fighting Cocks’, a pub in St Albans, Hertfordshire, considered the oldest in England with over a thousand years of history behind it or rather in its foundations: according to the official website of the venue they incorporate part of the building of the sovereign Offa di Mercia dating back to around 793, while the plan of the current building is dated to the 11th century.

The pub, however, did not withstand Covid and after the low influx of customers in the months of the lockdowns, financial ruin and the administration regime arrived. “It was painful for me and the staff,” said the manager, Christo Tofalli, 53, who has been at the helm of the venue for ten. However, there is a “120% chance”, as he himself stated, that it will reopen shortly thanks to a new manager. (HANDLE).
