For the second season of the Extreme E electric offroad series, which kicks off February 19 and 20 with the Desert X Prix in Neom, Saudi Arabia, Continental has developed a new high-performance tire. In developing the new CrossContact Extreme E model, Continental engineers focused not only on improving performance, but also on increasing the percentage of sustainable materials used by completely redesigning the tread compound and tire carcass.

Overall, around one third of the new CrossContact Extreme E consists of recycled and renewable raw materials. For this purpose, for example, silica extracted from the ashes of rice husks, a residue from agricultural processing, is used. In addition to treated steel and carbon black, Continental is also using polyester yarn made from recycled PET bottles for the first time. Thanks to the use of plastic bottles, conventional polyester has been completely replaced in the new CrossContact Extreme E. The polyester in the carcass, i.e. the supporting structure of a tire, is produced by a Continental partner with the help of the so-called ContiRe.Tex technology and without any intermediate chemical steps starting from old PET bottles that can no longer be reused. Each of the 30 tires that Continental supplies to each of the ten Extreme E series teams throughout the second season now contains polyester made from approximately 60 recycled PET bottles. This technology will be introduced later this year in the series production of various Continental premium tires.

Sandra Roslan, who is in charge of Extreme E at Continental, is confident that the commitment of the Continental developers will also have an impact on the future of conventional tires: “For Extreme E we test our latest technologies and research under particularly extreme and unique conditions. These results will help us introduce new sustainable solutions into our series production. ” The second generation of the CrossContact Extreme E will be used in all five races of the 2022 season and is optimized to ensure maximum performance in all climatic conditions and types of terrain. The size, diameter and width of the tire remained unchanged, i.e. equal to 37 X 12.5 R17, therefore 37 inches (940 mm) in diameter, 12.5 inches (317 mm) in width and 17 inches (432 mm) ) of a circle.
