Donations to associations: race against time before December 31

There is not much time left to donate to charities and benefit from tax relief. After December 31 at midnight, the sums paid no longer allow them to obtain a tax reduction or credit for the year 2019. The associations know this and spare no effort to remind their donors of this deadline.

“Almost 10% of our online fundraising is done on December 31 alone.” For Dominique Avril, responsible for collecting donations at the Order of Malta, the countdown has begun. The last three days of 2019 are crucial for his association, like the dozens of others that rely on the generosity of the French. “Until 11:59 p.m. people are still donating.”

30% of donations made during the year are made in December

In total, 30% of donations made during the year are paid this month. To maximize them, managers therefore chain reminders to donors: mail, e-mail, sms… all means are good to tell them that there is no time to lose. “We emphasize the tax exemption of donations [qui se calcule sur l’année civile] but also on the concrete impact they can have for our projects”, explains Aurélie Jorgowski-Biard, collection manager at Action Enfance, which welcomes children and adolescents in difficulty in villages.

These last hours are all the more important as the collection has been “average” this year, according to France Générosités, the organization which brings together most of the major charities in France. Last year already, the fears of the French on the deduction at the source had penalized the donations. These concerns having now been lifted, the organizations therefore hope to do better this year.
