The new BMW 5 Series will also be electric

Not only more dynamic and more digital but the eighth generation of BMW 5 Series will also be electric. The renewed 5 Series sedan, which will debut in a few months, was anticipated by the German company as a more dynamic and comfortable model, equipped with BMW Operating System 8.5 with BMW Curved Display, innovative digital services and, for the first time, a purely electric in the BMW i5 variant.
Thanks to the flexible architecture of the powertrains, it can in fact be offered in all-electric and plug-in hybrid variants, as well as powered by efficient petrol and diesel engines, with 48V mild hybrid technology.
At the BMW Group Annual Conference 2023, Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, announced further details on the model range of the new 5 Series, indicating that the sedan will also be available as an all-electric BMW M Performance model.
“The all-electric BMW i4 M50 demonstrates how BMW combines high performance and electric mobility to perfection. It was the best-selling BMW M model worldwide in 2022. An all-electric performance model from BMW M GmbH it will also be included in the line-up of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan.”
Zipse then revealed that a new variant will add to the already large choice of engines of the new 5 Series Touring. “The 5 Series Touring – added Zipse – is very popular, especially in Europe. From spring 2024 it will also be available in an all-electric version”.
With the arrival of the BMW i5 sedan in the premium executive segment, followed by the i5 Touring in 2024, the BMW Group will continue to expand its all-electric offering.
The new 5 Series sedan will be built exclusively at the Dingolfing plant, the plant in Lower Bavaria is the company’s largest production site in Europe.
The BMW Group Plant Dingolfing also houses the competence center for the production of electric drive systems, which has the task of producing both the electric motors and the high-voltage batteries for the i5 directly on site.
