Abarth 500e: all the work behind its sound

To make the new Abarth 500e engaging, also from a sound point of view, the brand with the scorpion has enriched the car with the Sound Generator. In fact, the car is equipped with the Sound System developed by a team of Sound Designers, in collaboration with the Sound Design Studio. The project, which took about 6 months of continuous work, lasted about two years, with more than 6,000 hours needed to analyze and create the perfect sound for each phase of the driving experience.

The specialists of the Italian NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness) department of Stellantis started from the development of the software to arrive at the creation of the sound, focusing both on the creative and on the technological part, and carried out part of the tests and sound studies in a room semi-anechoic, specially designed to be isolated from the surrounding environment. Specifically, the current sound of the Abarth petrol engine was recorded during all the different driving phases, in order to obtain perfect performance and as close as possible to the original one.

Subsequently, specific sound calibrations were carried out, and the recordings were analyzed to extract the distinctive frequencies that make up the brand’s DNA, with the aim of creating a new sound in a virtual matrix enriched by additional tones. It was also important to balance the Sound Generator, with an intensity directly proportional to speed, to provide a pleasant driving experience through a realistic sound, and in full compliance with homologation restrictions.
