For auto production, worst quarter for 19 years in Brazil

Vehicle production between January and March of this year in Brazil had its worst quarter in 19 years: the president of the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers (Anfavea), Marcio de Lima Leite, revealed today. With less than 540,000 cars, trucks and buses produced, “the first quarter of this year was the worst quarter since 2004, recalling that in 2004 there were less than half the assemblers we have today in Brazil,” said Leite . Although there was a recovery in March compared to February, the numbers for the first quarter are “worrying” and this has forced “eight manufacturers to partially suspend activity” and two others to reduce work shifts “without foreseeing a return previous rounds”. According to the expert, the “high interest rates” affected the sector’s activity at the same time as they caused “the demand for new vehicles to decrease”. Anfavea has met “with a certain frequency with the vice president Geraldo Alckmin (who is also minister of industry) and the minister of finance, Fernando Haddad “to seek “solutions” to the problem, Leite later announced.
