Toyota and Komatsu team up for self-driving pickup truck

The Toyota automotive group and Komatsu, a Japanese company of global reference in the production of construction equipment and for the mining industry, have signed an agreement for the development of a self-driving pick-up.
The light vehicle will be built by Casa delle Tre Ellissi and will have to integrate with the management systems developed by Komatsu, to be used mainly in extraction quarries, in combination with maxi-trucks for transporting mining material, also autonomous driving, already used in various sites.
The goals of the partnership include the improvement of the safety of use of light vehicles in difficult areas such as mines and the increase in production efficiency. At the moment, in fact, the ‘mixed’ use of self-driving heavy vehicles and light vehicles driven by drivers causes delays on the routes, mainly due to human distractions.
The timeline objective of the agreement is to achieve by January 2024 the creation of the first light unmanned vehicle to be tested in operational areas.
