Volvo EX30 focuses on safety in urban driving

The debut of the Volvo EX30 compact SUV, fully electric and which aims to raise the level of safety standards in the city, is coming soon. Despite being the Swedish company’s smallest ever SUV, the Volvo EX30, soon to be released and fully electric, focuses on safety by exploiting all of Volvo’s expertise. On busy urban roads, for example, a car door inadvertently opening in the path of a cyclist is responsible for a significant number of cycling accidents.

So-called door-opening accidents account for up to a fifth of all reported cycling accidents in some cities. To address this issue, the forthcoming Volvo EX30 is equipped with a door open warning system that warns you with visual and audible signals when you are about to open the door as a cyclist or other traffic user approaches. . The door open warning is one of the many features of the Safe Space technology in the Volvo EX30. The car was designed to be ‘city-proof’ and features technology specifically designed to protect people in the busiest urban contexts.

“We have long been concerned with safety in urban areas – said Åsa Haglund, head of the Volvo Safety Center – where cars share space with pedestrians and cyclists. With the Volvo EX30 we are raising the level of urban safety, creating a SUV of small size which proves to be the perfect companion for a comfortable driving experience, but which is also able to protect you and other road users in the busiest areas of modern cities”. Still on the safety front, the EX30 is equipped with a frame and safety cage made with various types of high-strength steel that effectively compensate for the impact of a possible accident. The EX30 is also equipped with a side airbag on the inside of the driver’s seat, designed to reduce injuries to the head and chest in the event of a side impact.

Inside the EX30, a new Advanced Driver Condition Sensing system comes as standard and watches over the driver when they’re not at their best. In addition to hand detection on the steering wheel, the car has a special sensor, based on powerful algorithms and located behind the steering wheel, which detects eye and face movements approximately 13 times per second. In this way, the EX30 can understand if the driver is distracted, drowsy or otherwise inattentive, even when he does not realize it. On June 7, the Volvo EX30 will make its world debut. Starting from the same date it will be possible to order or pre-order it in some selected markets.
