Toyo Tire aims for ever more sustainable tyres

A collaboration between Toyo Tire Corporation and the world of universities aims at the sustainability of tires. The manufacturer has in fact announced a technological milestone obtained thanks to the collaboration with the University of Toyama in Japan, with which the development of catalysts capable of converting carbon dioxide into high-yield butadiene has been perfected.
If carbon dioxide is an element naturally present in nature, which cannot be extinguished, butadiene is a polymer that makes up tyres. This new process makes it possible to obtain butadiene from non-oil sources and represents an eco-sustainable production horizon.
This research required more than seven years of work by Toyo Tire Corporation and Toyama University. Toyo Tire Corporation also promotes the use of natural-derived materials and other sustainable materials for rubber not only for series production but also and above all for Motorsport, the most important development and performance testing ground for a tyre.
By bringing the knowledge gained from testing in demanding driving conditions, such as a race, to mass production technology, it is possible to accelerate the development of unique, high-performance products with an environmentally friendly soul. With this in mind, Toyo Tire Corporation has announced the goal of increasing the percentage of sustainable materials to 40% in the composition of tires by 2030. (
