Renault surprisingly unveils the electric revival of the Twingo

Renault will use the capabilities and opportunities offered by its subsidiary Ampere (dedicated to the world of electric cars) to revolutionize the 100% battery-powered car market, both from the point of view of industrial costs and profits and with regards to ‘democratisation’ of this solution, which is currently still too expensive.
Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault, said this today during the Ampere capital market day. “In the purest spirit of Renault – underlined de Meo – Ampere is designed to make electric and connected cars accessible to all, satisfying the imperatives of the energy transition and seizing market growth opportunities”.
Ampere aims first and foremost to seek excellence in technology and customer experience: two native electric vehicle platforms, a strong lineup of seven vehicles, a new generation of centralized electronic architecture, a high-end software suite, based on Android, and the most compact and efficient electric vehicle supplier and manufacturing ecosystem, all created in Europe.
Luca de Meo was precise: “with high-performance vehicles, competitive prices, a strong brand and high-quality services, Ampere is well positioned to capture the growth of the European electric vehicle market. We are targeting average annual growth in its revenues by 30% between 2023 and 2031. From 10 billion euros in 2025 with 4 electric models, Ampere will grow to over 25 billion in 2031 with a portfolio of 7 competitive models”.

To know more ANSA Agency Renault prepares the Ampere IPO, revenues of 25 billion in 2031 Ampere, Renault’s electric subsidiary, is aiming for a turnover of more than 25 billion euros in 2031, a growth rate of 30% each year, and an operating profit margin of more than 10% from 2030.

And thanks to the 40% cost reduction plan that will be implemented “in one generation, therefore at the 2027/2028 target”, Ampere will be able to “gradually reduce the prices of its vehicles while improving margins” by aiming to break even in 2025 – both on operating margin and free cash flow – and to an operating margin above 10% from 2030.
To democratize electric cars in Europe and thus broaden the customer base, Ampere will exploit Groupe Renault’s consolidated position in the B segment and C segment which together will represent 75% of the European electric vehicle market in 2030 with growth of approximately 25%. % per year.
This opportunity – underlined de Meo – can be seized by achieving price parity between electric and thermal models in the face of competition in the B and C segments. Ampere already has a great competitive advantage with the AmpR Small platform for the B segment (formerly CMF-B EV) and the AmpR Medium for the C segment (formerly CMF-EV).
But Ampere also has a clear roadmap to reduce its costs. By 2027/2028, when the 2nd generation of Mégane E-Tech and Scenic E-Tech will arrive while preserving margins.
Overall costs will be reduced by 40% thanks to the improvement of the propulsion system (-50% battery and -50% electric motor) and a 25% reduction in the cost of the platforms and 15% in the costs of the bodywork and passenger compartment.

In the B segment, Ampere will launch Renault 5 in 2024 – with a reveal in February at the Geneva Motor Show – at an entry price of around 25,000 euros. This model will be followed by the Renault 4 in 2025. And the following year another car will arrive, revived in an electric-only way, drawing on the great history of the Losanga.
It is the Twingo that Luca de Meo surprisingly revealed today (the model, developed in just 2 years was known until today as Legend) which will be offered from 2026 with a price of less than 20,000 euros. The car, of which no technical details have been revealed, is inspired in its bodywork by the now iconic Twingo from 1993.
The CEO of Renault explained that this ‘democratisation’ of the new Twingo will be achieved with a radical cost cut (50% less materials compared to a corresponding model) and will be based on a very efficient propulsion system, with a consumption of just 10 kWh every 100 km.
A targeted offensive based on the new organization concentrated in Ampere, the one explained by de Meo, which will be able to count on the collaboration of technological partners such as Qualcomm Technologies and Google and – on a financial level – the capital that will arrive with the next listing on the stock exchange and with which Renault aims to raise 8-10 billion euros.
