The history of Kangoo begins in the 1990s, when Renault entrusted the production of this vehicle to the Maubeuge plant, with an investment of over 500 million euros to modernize the plants. 1994 is the year of the first exploit, with the installation of a thermal transfer press with 5,400 tons of pressure, one of the largest in Europe, for the molding of components such as the tailgate, the floor and the sides of the bodywork .
The ergonomics of the workstations were then improved by installing, for the first time, variable height chains.
Automated systems have thus been introduced to improve safety and quality. Production of the X76 (the industrial name of Kangoo) began in 1997.
The event marked a fundamental stage in the history of Renault and the Maubeuge plant, because for the first time a commercial vehicle ceases to be a ‘simple’ commercial vehicle, thanks to its modularity and versatility, in addition to its functional design. Kangoo comes in two distinct versions, Kangoo for private individuals and Kangoo Express for traders, artisans and fleets, with tailor-made fittings.
In 2008 Kangoo gives way to Kangoo 2 which focuses on better behavior on the road, on three lengths and on the introduction of innovations (completely foldable bench, luggage rack that transforms into roof bars in a flash, etc.) to be even more practical for private individuals and more functional in the commercial vehicle version.
In 2011 Renault launched the electric version of Kangoo in Maubeuge and started a new revolution on the automotive market. Kangoo ZE (where ZE stands for zero emissions) will become the first 100% electric vehicle to obtain the prestigious title of International Van Of The Year.
After the restyling of Kangoo 2 in 2013, production of the third generation of Kangoo begins in 2021 at the Maubeuge plant.
