Lexus GX 550 Overtrail, when luxury meets tough off-road

The new Lexus GX 550 Overtrail SUV.
which is inspired by the Offroad Team Jaos version which in 2023 completed the entire 2,110 km route of the grueling Mexican Baja 1000 race. And it does so by adding grit and off-road capability to the values that are typical of the luxurious Japanese maxi SUV.
The creator of this transformation in aesthetics and content is the Jaos Corporation which is based in the Kitagunma district, Japan and is well known to enthusiasts for its off-road conversion kits for the most popular 4×4 models including Mini Countryman and Jeep Renegade.
Scheduled to go on sale later this year – under the concept of The Premium Off-Roader – in the Japanese market only, the new Lexus GX 550 promises “exhilarating experiences in a variety of scenarios, from rugged off-road terrain to urban streets”.
And in particular – the company recalls – “this setup embodies the essence of the Overtrail Project launched by the premium brand of the Toyota Group. “As we travel towards the future – Lexus underlines in this regard – the Overtrail project continues to develop, cultivating the relationship between man, nature and mobility.
With each new chapter, we seek to enhance the thrill of adventure, blending it seamlessly with the elegance of luxury.”
With the adventurous appearance and off-road performance of a ‘basic’ 4×4 that blends perfectly with a refined and ‘premium’ design, ideal for any SUV situation the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail is intended for a contemporary clientele seeking the balance between satisfaction staff and respect for the environment.
Produced for the moment as a unique display example (it was presented at the Tokyo Auto Show), the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail incorporates distinctive customizations thanks to the collaboration with the manufacturer of aftermarket components for 4WDs and SUVs Jaos.
At the front, a new robust bumper stands out – typical of heavy off-road vehicles – which was created specifically using light and highly rigid plastic resins.
Other off-road components have also been added, including protective tailpieces for the mudguards, tube side steps to safeguard the side sills and at the same time facilitate entry and exit, large ‘mud guard’ splash guards to protect the bodywork from debris while driving off-road vehicles and aluminum skid plates.
Every dynamic aspect of the standard GX 550 SUV has been evaluated for ‘tougher’ use. And the Lexus and Jaos technicians came to the conclusion that for the Overtrail setup it was sufficient to adopt a lifting kit and the use of 18-inch wheels – light but with great rigidity – shod with Toyo Open Country tires A/T III LT 275/70 R18.
