The historic Ice Race which takes place on the frozen Lake Zell in Austria (a few steps from the Porsche family home) this year doubles and lands in the United States arriving in Aspen, the famous ski resort in Colorado.
And for this edition the organizers have chosen to amaze professionals and spectators with a truly unique ‘winter’ show.
For the snow and ice race in Aspen, the organizers sent a splendid 911 GT1 track sedan from the Porsche Museum in Zuffenhausen, which boasts overall victory in the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1998, with Laurent Aiello, Allan McNish and Stéphane Ortelli who took turns at the wheel.
Porsche wanted to give its fans the chance to see the historic 911 GT1 in action once again but in very different conditions from those of June 1998 on the famous Circuit de la Sarthe in France.
With special winter tires fitted and the suspension set-up raised, the car also benefited from a special pre-heating system coming from the 919 Hybrid and a new mapping of the engine management software.
And it was Le Mans winner Ortelli who had the honor of driving it again this time on the snow and ice of Aspen. of his run in the GT1 Ice Race: “This is the beauty of the Porsche Museum – said Ortelli – where they not only take care of their cars so they can show them to spectators, but also ensure that they can be driven, and driven quickly. I will remember this experience for the rest of my life”.
