Many agree – by a year from the launch – on the fact that the Hybrid version of the new Fiat 600 combines the attractive and personal aesthetic (which resumes that iconic 500 in great elements) a greater versatility of use and also a price list that makes it accessible to a larger audience than the 100% electric which was presented in 2023.
‘Heart’ of this model is a thermal engine, based on the 3-cylinder 1.2 turbo widely used by Stellantis and equipped with a 48 volt Mild-hybrid system for a power of 100 HP and a maximum torque of 205 Nm.
The electrical intake, which has a gross 0.9 kWh battery, uses a 21 kW electric motor (28 HP) which adds 55 Nm to the provision of the thermal engine. The whole system must be underlined, is integrated into the new automatic double clutch transmission with 6 relationships and does not use as in other cases of external elements.
Even if it is a light ‘electrification’ – which allows you to travel just over 1 km, until the subsequent recharging, with the thermal engine off – the 600 Hybrid actually allows to alternate the two sources of energy, thanks to the constant recharging in the decelerations and braking.
As we have had the opportunity to check in an articulated road test – with the most different traffic and road conditions – the one that offers Fiat 600 Hybrid is an extremely fluid driving experience that allows you to enjoy the advantage of electric mobility, not only when you travel in the city at a speed of less than 30 km/h.
The Mild Hybrid 48 Volt system is electronically managed to provide a very useful support for the thermal engine not only on the streets of the cities and the hinterland, but also on the highway when releasing the accelerator pedal in stable or downhill conditions you get the so -called ‘sailing’ with thermal engine off.
In general (even if the 3 -cylinder is also felt in the passenger compartment) the advantages of this 48 Volt technology can be summarized in minor emissions and superior respect for the environment (the car is approved for 109 g/km of CO2) without giving up – thanks to the fluidity of the automatic double -clutch transmission and the reactivity of the 1.2 turbo engine – fun in driving and safety in accelerations, for example for a flip.
Fiat recalls that in normal driving conditions, the 600 Hybrid engine (also thanks to the operation with Miller cycle) is designed to optimize consumption and save up to 15% of CO2 emissions compared to a thermal engine with automatic transmission of similar performance. Fiat 600 Hybrid, at the traffic lights, does not stand out only for its fun aesthetic – and in the specimen on test for the particular painting – but also in order not to be left behind many other cars, including those of higher displacement.
Thanks to the contribution of the electrical unit (as we have 55 Nm more) and to an overall weight that is contained in 1,280 kg, of which only 15 for the battery, the 600 Hybrid is really very quick in going from 0 to 50 km – about 3.8 seconds – and reaches 100 per hour in just over 10 seconds.
No inferiority complex even on the highway, where you travel at speed really code with a wire of gas (sailing separately when the gas is zeroed) and you can reach – of course in the absence of limits – 185 km/h.
Since the city and daily use are natural environments for Fiat 600 Hybrid, it cannot be underlined that the 48 Volt electrical section optimizes the behavior of the thermal engine especially in the restart phases, attenuating the turbolag effect (i.e. the delay in feeling the effect of the turbine) and ensuring a prompt reactivity to the pressure on the accelerator pedal. In the same way, in case of departure and movement in purely electric mode, the combustion engine is turned on only in the event of a request for greater power.
The 100% electric propulsion can also be used for the so -called ‘e -cereping’ function which leaves the freedom to carry out a series of short forward movements without pressure on the accelerator, a very comfortable feature – for example – in the queue. In addition, 600 Hybrid can also be parked in 100% electric mode, (e-parking). Despite a length of 4.17 meters – which makes maneuvers easy, thanks also to the presence of an effective video surveillance – Fiat 600 Hybrid comfortably hosting 4-5 people who have 15 liters of internal compartments available and a trunk with 385 liters of capacity with rear backrests in position. All this (and much more) with a price list that starts from 24,950 euros but that – exploiting the Fiat promotion of scrapping and financing, can go down to 19,950.
