USA, GM car to train secret services agents

A small fleet of 10 different models of the General Motors range, by two two fast corvette chevrolet pick-ups, was delivered to the secret services of the United States “for tests and familiarization”. This was announced by a note from the US Secret Service Media Relations which specifies (it is obviously not a sensitive content) that the vehicles were delivered to the James J. Rowley Training Center (RTC) training center of the secret services to Laurel, Maryland.
Pick-ups, SUVs, sedans and sports cars have arrived there thanks to an agreement with General Motors, which provides some of the most popular and known protective vehicles of the secret services. Among these, the limousine for presidential parades and other armored SUVs often used in the processions.
“One of the reasons why RTC is so successful in our training mission – said Scott Simons, manager of RTC – is due to the relationships that we have cultivated with other law enforcement and partners of the private sector”.

The agents will be able to contact, drive and be educated to get the maximum from the vehicles – including emergency situations – at the wheel of two cadillac ct4 sedans, of two cadillac ct5 sedans, two corvettes, of a Cadillac Escalade SUV, of a Pick -up Chevrolet Colorado, of a chevrolet Tahoe with police setting and a Chevrolet SUV Suburban.
Simons stressed that “this opportunity with GM will be another tool that we can use to innovate and improve our dynamic training”.
Constantine Gerukos, RTC driving instructor for 13 years, said that “the instructors of the protective transport section was also asked to provide feedback on integrated technology in vehicles, improvements could prove to be useful for special secret services and uniform officers behind the wheel”.
“I think it is interesting to try all these different platforms to understand what is best suited and what we can use. Times change, and so also the rest of the world.
So, we have to do the same. ”
From the press release of the secret services, however, it turns out that one of the central problems is not linked to digital content, adas or artificial intelligence on board everyone (or almost) the latest generation vehicles. The debate, and the tests, revolve around the presence or not of the manual gearbox.
Mark Armstrong, driving instructor at the RTC for 10 years, said that “it is unlikely that a vehicle with manual gearbox will never be used by uniform agents during patrol”. “However, the special agents assigned to detached offices abroad or on the protection mission may be required to drive a vehicle with this type of gearbox”. And here at the James J. Rowley Training Center will be available “a platform will allow us to give instructions on how to drive vehicles with manual transmission for travel abroad”.
