We went to Iceland to try the blue oval pick-up on the typical lava roads of the island and test the E-AWD integral system obtained from the presence of electric technology positioned on the rear axle.
The best-selling pick-up in Europe mounts, for the first time, a hybrid engine that benefits from the electrical system to deal with the most demanding funds thanks to the adoption of all-wheel drive, given to the front by the thermal engine and, at the rear, by the 75 kW electromotor.
The production of Ranger Phev has already started at the Ford factory in Silverton (South Africa) and is sold in 180 markets all over the world. Ranger’s success in the segment in Europe is also confirmed in 2024, for the tenth consecutive year, with a share of over 43%, in Italy with 49%.
Ford Ranger Phev is built on an already known platform adapted to electrification needs. The dimensions are generous: 5,350 mm long, 2,207 mm wide and with a step of 3,270 mm. And, it allows a towing capacity of 3,500 kg as well as a useful flow rate of about a ton. During our Test Drive, we tried the performance of Ford Ranger Phev Wildtrack on different soils, changing the interaction between electric and thermal motor several times, as well as using the battery power with the EV, EV NOW, EV Later and EV Charge modes. That is, different choices on how to exploit the energy present in the 11.8 kWh battery (net), which allows you to reach a maximum autonomy of about 43 kilometers in the combined context.
The thermal heart of the pick-up is the 2.3-liter EcoBoost petrol engine which, together with the 75 kW electromotor, allows you to reach a total power of 281 HP and 697 Nm of torque. The system is combined with a 10 -speed automatic transmission integrated in the hybrid module that actively manages the misfortune between the two sources of energy through an electromechanical actuator.
The lithium -ion battery can be recharged with single -phase 16 -loader charger, requesting less than four hours for a complete recharge.
In the off-road area traveled in Iceland, we were also able to exploit the seven Normal driving modes, Eco, Sport, Slipperry, Tow/Haul, Mid/Ruts and Sand. With these it was possible to manage traction and advance on accidental funds, cross rivers, climb on a volcano with, of course, high slopes and important descents, the latter faced with the Hill Descend Control system. In addition, it is possible to activate the front or whole wheel drive thanks to the rotor present in the central tunnel.
Overall, Ford Ranger Phev is a useful means for those who need a pick-up also to work and, inside, it has functional accessories, such as the numerous pockets and storage compartments but can also be comfortable thanks to the adoption of soft-touch materials and has an ergonomy derived from the cars, demonstrated by the presence of the 8-inch digital dashboard and the 12-inch vertical display equipped of the Sync 4a system.
