Istat: exceptional growth in Italy’s GDP, + 6.6% in 2021

(ANSA) – ROME, MARCH 01 – In 2021, GDP at market prices was equal to 1,781,221 million current euros, with an increase of 7.5% compared to the previous year. In volume, GDP grew by 6.6%. Istat notes this, specifying that “in 2021 the Italian economy recorded an exceptionally intense growth due to the strong recovery in production, after a 2020 characterized by the effects of the health emergency”.

The growth in GDP was mainly driven by domestic demand, while foreign demand and the change in inventories provided very limited contributions.

In 2021 the general government (PA) deficit, measured in relation to GDP, was equal to -7.2%, compared to -9.6% in 2020. Istat specifies that “the net debt of the public sector recorded a clear improvement compared to 2020 due to the good trend in revenues against the more contained increase in expenditure, despite the continuation of the support measures introduced to counter the effects of the crisis “. The primary balance (net debt minus interest expenditure) measured in relation to GDP was -3.6% (-6.1% in 2020).

Public debt also fell last year, falling to 150.4% of GDP from 155.3% in 2020. (ANSA).
