In Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, onion is now sold on average two times cheaper than in Ukraine

Ukraine may again become an importer of onions after a season of exporting this type of vegetables to a record number of countries. Wholesale prices for onions in the domestic market are record-breaking for this period of the year.

The wholesale price for standard quality onions is 7 UAH / kg (0.26 dollars per kg) and is 2.3 times higher than last year’s price.

In Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, onion is now sold on average two times cheaper – at $ 0.12-0.14 per kg than in Ukraine.

Even in Russia, onions are sold cheaper than in Ukraine. Although the prices for most types of vegetables and potatoes are unusually high this year. And in Poland, onions cost the same as in Ukraine, but prices have increased only recently, and before that they were noticeably lower.

In Moldova, onion prices are also lower than in Ukraine. Today it is quite possible to supply onions from Moldova to the Ukrainian market. Traders and vegetable growers believe that onion prices will rise in the second half of the season.

APK-Inform analysts, who are finishing updating their annual forecast of production and prices for vegetables and fruits in Ukraine for the season 2021/2022, confirm the decline in onion production in the country this year. However, they do not disclose the details of the forecast for growth or decline in prices for it.

But despite the large difference in prices, it is still unprofitable to import onions from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan to Ukraine. The reason for this is the high transport costs. At the same time, as representatives of the wholesale trade say, imports will again become possible if onion prices in Ukraine rise by another 10%.

Wheat prices skyrocketed

In August, milling wheat in Kazakhstan was sold at 90-95 thousand tenge / ton or 211-223 dollars / ton, depending on the region, and today the prices have reached a record 110-115 thousand tenge / ton or 258-270 dollars for the country. /T. Prices for other agricultural products also rose.

What prices does Viterra offer:

  • wheat – 107-112 thousand tenge / t;
  • barley – from 95 thousand tenge / t and more;
  • flax – from 310 thousand tenge / t;
  • peas – from 135 thousand tenge / t.

The prices for durum wheat have grown the most – until recently they were offered 210 thousand tenge / ton or 493 dollars / ton, and now prices have reached 220 thousand tenge / ton or 516 dollars / ton.

Recall that the yield of grain crops in 2021 increased by 18% compared to last year. As of August 19, farmers harvested more than 31 million tons of grain, which is 11% more than in the entire period of the previous year.

Earlier on August 18, Prime Minister Denis Shmygal, during a government meeting, said that the grain harvest this year could become a record. The head of the Cabinet said that by mid-August, 29 million tons of wheat had been milled in the country, which is more than for the entire 2020 season.

Also in Ukraine, the price of food wheat increased by 15% compared to last year and now fluctuates between 8-8.5 thousand hryvnia per ton. And for fodder – in the range of 7.3-8 thousand UAH per ton.
