Damaged dollars and worn euros – where and how to exchange foreign banknotes

The National Bank of Ukraine does not exchange foreign currency banknotes, but accepts them for collection under certain conditions.

The editors of “Today” helps to figure out what to do with damaged banknotes of euros, dollars, zlotys and other foreign currencies.

Significantly worn banknotes are sent by the bank to a foreign bank and are reimbursed for them. Accordingly, the client who brought the damaged cash to the bank, can get money for it immediately, but within the time period set by the bank. Although some financial institutions can make a settlement immediately.

What banknotes are accepted?

Not all banknotes are exchanged at the bank, but only those that meet certain criteria. Exchangeable currency with the following characteristics:

  • burnt, burnt or damaged banknotes as a result of moisture;
  • with signs of decay;
  • torn or cut into pieces;
  • with damaged design and protection elements;
  • with changed color of paper or images;
  • with large stains and pollution;
  • have typographical flaws.

Bank cards as an alternative to cash

During the war, Ukrainians can make transactions using bank cards and pay online. Moreover, it is even recommended. In case the card is lost or stolen, there are some simple tips.

Banks will also work on holidays – they have published work schedules for Easter and holidays. Weekends will not be carried over to the next day after the holiday. The electronic payment system will work without interruption from 23 to 25 April.

Ukrainians will also be able to receive a refund for deposits in liquidated banks – PrivatBank was the first to provide this service. Guaranteed compensation will be issued online, so you do not need to go to the branch.

Earlier we wrote that Ukrainians began to complain about the cancellation of credit holidays in some banks. Money was automatically debited from user accounts without notification. Subsequently, the NBU developed new recommendations for banks, financial and collection institutions regarding loans during the war.
