(ANSA) – ROME, 08 JUL – The number of individuals in absolute poverty has almost tripled from 2005 to 2021, going from 1.9 to 5.6 million (9.4% of the total), while families have doubled since 800 thousand to 1.96 million (7.5%), according to the Istat annual report. Absolute poverty is three times more frequent among minors (from 3.9% in 2005 to 14.2% in 2021) and a particularly negative dynamic also characterizes young people between 18 and 34 years (the incidence has reached 11.1%, a value almost four times higher than in 2005, 3.1%).

However, the economic support measures provided in 2020, in particular citizenship and emergency income, “have prevented one million individuals (about 500 thousand families) from being in a condition of absolute poverty”, indicates Istat.

The intensity of poverty, without subsidies, would have been 10 percentage points higher in 2020, reaching 28.8% (compared to 18.7% observed). (HANDLE).
