(ANSA) – ROME, JUL 18 – Eni has completed the construction of the plant for the collection and squeezing of oil seeds (agri-hub) in Makueni, Kenya, and started the production of the first vegetable oil for bio-refineries. The first agri-hub will have an installed capacity of 15 thousand tons with an expected production of 2,500 tons in 2022.

“This project embodies all the pillars of Eni’s approach to sustainability. Carbon neutrality, because bio-refining is an important element in our path towards zero emissions by 2050. Operational excellence, because we have completed the works on time expected, one year after the agreement with the Kenyan government and six months after the start of the construction site, in total safety with more than 200,000 hours worked without any accidents. Social development, with benefits in terms of employment: we involved 25,000 farmers and employees up to 200 people a day in the construction of the center. In our model of vertical integration, the cultivation of seeds is entrusted to local farmers in order to promote access to the market by guaranteeing access to land “, said Claudio Descalzi, CEO by Eni.
