(ANSA) – ROME, JUL 18 – “In May the economic growth of exports strengthened, uninterrupted since the beginning of the year, supported by trade with both EU and non-EU countries and mainly driven by the sales of capital goods and intermediate goods”. This was stated by Istat, which recorded, compared to April, an economic growth “more intense for Italian exports” (+ 4.8%) and slight for imports (+ 0.3%).

On an annual basis, exports marked “a clear acceleration (+ 29.5%, from + 15.1% in April), with increases spread to all sectors and to all the main partner countries, with the exception of Russia and China” . For imports, the tendential increase is 48.8%. Italy’s energy deficit in May “remains large but decreases compared to April” up to 8.26 billion (it was 9.11 billion the month before but 2, 98 billion a year earlier), “mainly due to the decrease in the average unit values of gas, crude oil and electricity imports”, according to Istat. “The high surplus in the trade of non-energy products” (8.24 billion) leads to a “slightly negative, close to balance” trade balance of -12 million euro, compared to a surplus of 5.63 billion in the same month of 2021.
