In the second quarter of the year, Lufthansa recorded a positive result before financial charges (Ebit) of 393 million, the first ‘black’ figure since the beginning of the pandemic, forecasting a “significant increase” in the Ebit in the third quarter compared to the second .
In general, the operating profit is estimated at at least 500 million for the whole of 2022.
However, the German group was driven above all by the excellent results of the cargo sector, thanks to the strong demand and high prices of freight transport, while the results of the airlines (which also include Austrian, Swiss, Eurowings and Brussels Airlines) remained negative. After the six-monthly data, the Lufthansa share rises on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange by 5% to 6.4 euros.
The result of the second quarter was supported by the strong demand for flights that is being recorded worldwide, despite the inconvenience at airports and the limits introduced by the Covid pandemic. Group net profit amounted to € 259 million against a loss of € 756 million in the same quarter of 2021, while in the first half the result is still negative.
After heavily reducing employees during the toughest quarters due to the effects of the virus, Lufthansa now plans to hire around 10,000 people over the next 18 months. “Together we have led the group through the pandemic and the worst financial crisis in our history – comments CEO Carsten Spohr – and now we must continue to stabilize our flight operations”.
The German group, which for the rest of the year still expects a strong demand for tickets, in the first half of the year recorded significant growth in turnover to 13.8 billion compared to 5.8 billion in the same period of 2021, with 42 million. of passengers carried. In the second quarter alone, passengers totaled 29 million.
