Work: ‘The government’s hypothesis is to reduce taxes on thirteenth employees’

Up to 7 percentage points of contribution levy less for incomes up to 25 thousand euros, 6 points for those who reach 35 thousand euros. It could go so far as to guarantee “up to 100 euros per month on average” plus the strengthening of the cut in the tax wedge launched by the government on May 1st. The “most important tax cut in recent decades”, defines Giorgia Meloni. An exaggeration for the opposition, which recalls the 9-10 billion allocated by Mario Draghi, the over 9 billion of the Renzi Bonus, then increased by the Conte government. The intervention desired by the premier on Workers’ Day is worth 3.5-4 billion euros, covers the second half of 2023, and is accompanied by the executive’s desire to make it “structural”. “It is a choice of which I am deeply proud, I really cannot understand who is able to argue even about this”, underlined the premier in the video published on social networks, with over half a million views in 24 hours. “It’s a bonus for five months. It’s worth less than the bonuses given by the Draghi government”, the attack by the Democratic Party. The minimum wage was supposed to be the priority for M5s leader Giuseppe Conte, who announces a demonstration in June against the executive. “The government is putting patches, but a strategy is needed. We cannot go ahead with propaganda shots”, the judgment of the CGIL secretary Maurizio Landini. “The cutting of the wedge is an important signal. But insufficient. It must be made structural”, the request of that of the CISL, Luigi Sbarra. The government is now looking at that horizon, while the decree on employment is still being defined.

The plan, revealed by Minister of Labour, Marina Calderone, implies the need to find another 10 billion euros. Hence the caution: “There must be a situation that allows it. We must act with prudence with attention to the accounts”. The next step is inevitably to find covers. In the centre-right there is the hope that in the future the energy emergency will end and no other interventions will be needed to support families and businesses for bills. Extra profits are another objective that is repeated in the considerations. “Unfortunately, the mechanism based on VAT flows has not hit the mark” he admitted the Deputy Minister of Economy, Maurizio Leo, underlining that compared to the 11 billion expected, the State has collected “only 2.8. So there is a difference of 8. This is perhaps a concern and we will see how and if it can be covered”. In recent months those of energy companies have been taxed. Faced with the hypothesis of focusing on those of the banks (increased with the rise in interest rates), Leo clarified that “there is no immediate measure on which action is being taken”.

However, Leo revealed two other objectives of Palazzo Chigi and Mef: to reduce taxes on employees’ thirteenths, “to put more money into the pockets of Italians in the last month of the year”; and “stabilize” the measure on company fringe benefits, envisaged by the decree to raise the exemption threshold up to 3 thousand euros. The intervention at work comes close to the vote in various cities, such as Ancona and Brescia, where Meloni is also expected for the final rallies. Your May agenda is also full of international commitments: you could go to Prague on 10 and 11, then you are expected in Iceland for the Council of Europe, and then in Japan for the G7. Without forgetting the European Council at the end of June, with a focus on migrants: “The Commission – he underlined after the bilateral meeting with the Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer – will have to present more concretely that paradigm shift that we have asked for in the defense of external borders, in the attention to all routes including the sea route”. A second message to Brussels concerns the new Stability Pact: “It would be short-sighted to focus on the green and digital transition, on investments in defense and then not take these priorities into account when calculating the deficit-GDP ratio”. The goal, not only during these engagements, is to avoid new parliamentary slip-ups like the one that rocked your visit to London last Thursday. The level of attention on attendance increased when work resumed: in FdI they did not appreciate the absences of FI colleagues in some commissions in the Chamber, and they did not hide it.

From work, Renzi: ‘Meloni says the most important tax cut in decades. It’s false’

“I’m not ruling anything out. We are asking for real change, if there are no answers and they continue not to involve us, we will implement whatever is necessary. The government does not have a strategy, it is moving forward in a propaganda way”. Thus the general secretary of the CGIL, Maurizio Landini, on “The horse and the tower” on Rai3, answers the question of whether he does not rule out the general strike. “The government respects the unions. We respect it”, says Landini, noting among other things that the labor decree “widens precariousness”. Meanwhile, recalls Landini, the three joint demonstrations are scheduled for the next three Saturdays.

“We will stand by the joint mobilization of the trade unions. We are extremely concerned by what the government is doing. We will stand by the unions”. The secretary of the Democratic Party said so Elly Schlein on the sidelines of an appointment in Pomezia.
