Will there be watermelons in summer in Ukraine? It became known how the undermining of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station will affect the harvest.

In the de-occupied part of the Kherson region, farmers blew up gourds this spring, hoping to reap a good harvest in the summer. But the undermining of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station by the invaders and the flooding of the territories can lead to a significant reduction in yield.

Sergey Ivashchenko, executive director of the Ukrainian Grain Association, spoke about this in an interview with NV. After the destruction of the dam, there is an increase in the water level in the Dnieper, respectively, this can lead to negative consequences, because a large volume of water will resemble, in particular, the fields dotted with gourds.

“Watermelons are usually grown on the left bank of the Dnieper. Therefore, there will be a problem with their supply. And even intensify. In recent months, we have observed an increase in the water level in the middle Dnieper, which was associated with the actions of Russian aggressors. This can lead to more negative consequences. Higher water levels 30-40 cm in the river, respectively, a larger volume of water will be discharged due to a damaged dam,” Ivashchenko said.

Yields will drop significantly in the region, he says. The fact is that irrigation systems will suffer significantly – they will be washed out or damaged, if they still exist.

“Perhaps the invaders dug them up and took them out. The yield will drop significantly. However, the damage is still difficult to assess. We can say for sure that now we are talking about the survival of farmers working in the Kherson region,” the specialist concluded.

As GLOBAL HAPPENINGS reported, prices for vegetables are expected to drop in Ukraine in the near future. But not all of them are cheaper. For example, tomatoes and cucumbers will remain quite expensive. Instead, the “borsch set” (potatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage) will become cheaper.
