The German government has called on members of the US Congress not to impose additional sanctions against the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

This is reported by the Axios edition, referring to the documents received at its disposal.

According to German politicians, the sanctions against the pipeline will weaken the credibility of the United States and “ultimately damage the transatlantic unity.”

However, disgruntled Republicans in the US Congress are demanding that President Biden introduce tougher sanctions and measures against Nord Stream 2.

In a secret document dated November 19, which was leaked to the media, it is noted that Germany will take some steps if Russia begins to use gas as a weapon.

However, the same document states that these steps exclude strong public statementswho criticize Russia’s behavior, give an “estimate” of the likelihood of termination of future meetings on political topics and consider the restrictions that can be imposed on future projects of the Russian Federation.

The authors of the document also note that Nord Stream 2 does not threaten Ukraine and will be so before that, as long as “reasonable gas transit is ensured.”

Also in the document are American sanctions are called “Putin’s victory”, since they, in Germany’s opinion, will divide the Western allies.

US sanctions against Nord Stream 2

On November 23, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that they are imposing sanctions against Nord Stream 2, namely against two ships and one company participating in the project.

Such measures in the Russian Federation were called a violation of international law, but in Naftogaz they supported, although they believe that these sanctions are too weak. Oleksandr Okhrimenko, President of the Ukrainian Analytical Center, shares this opinion.

In an exclusive commentary to Segodnya, the expert said that these are only “catch-up sanctions” to show their fight against Putin’s project.

British Ambassador Melinda Simmons also warns about the danger of Nord Stream 2 for Ukraine.
