What is the “Inventing Anna” series everyone is talking about?

For a whole year, the young and luxurious Anna Delvey deceived the rich (and not so) residents of Manhattan, making useful contacts and relaxing at their expense.

Everyone in New York knew her as the heiress of wealthy parents, and she really looked like that. Moreover, Anna spent impressive sums and did not skimp on tips.

Who is Anna Delvey

The series “Inventing Anna” is based on the true story of the daughter of a Russian trucker – Anna Sorokina. Anna was born in the Moscow region, but her family moved to Germany. The girl always aspired to something more, and she told her parents that her future was the best investment.

After studying quite a bit at a London college, Anna moved to Paris. There she got an internship at Purple magazine and came up with a pseudonym – Anna Delvey. In 2016, she moved to New York, where her period of “golden life” began, ending with SPOILER! imprisonment.

From jail to screen

In 2018, Netflix bought the film rights to a New York Magazine article that tells the story of a swindler and paid Anna Sorokina $320,000 to use her story. “Inventing Anna” was written by Shonda Rhimes, who wrote Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. The role of Sorokina went to the star of “Ozark” Julia Garner.

Plot (with spoilers)

At the beginning of the first episode, viewers are briefly introduced to the main character, who is behind bars, and more time is devoted to the journalist Vivian (Anna Chlumsky), who grabs Sorokina’s case in the hope of rehabilitating her career.

Vivian meets a swindler and tries to persuade her for an interview, because it will be a real exclusive. She seeks out everyone who knew Anna Delvey to study her history and get to the bottom of the truth.

The journalist is amazed at how a young girl was able to pull off such a story with almost no dollar in her pocket, and so masterfully circle people around her finger. No, Anna Delvey is not the stupid thief she is made out to be in court, she is a skilled manipulator.

After several attempts, Vivian still manages to win over the detainee Anna Delvey and the women make a deal – a sensation in exchange for fame.

The journalist investigates all the details of Anna’s big deception. From her acquaintances, she learns that the accused behaved quite coldly, while everyone wanted to be near her. Anna changed her appearance, but her strong-willed character and prudence were unchanged.

Delvi wore the most expensive brands, she had impeccable taste, she always said what she thought.

Anna Sorokina received hundreds of thousands of dollars from her wealthy friends, promised to return the money to them, but, of course, she never did.

Ultimately, she was discovered and accused of embezzling large sums of money. Delvi owed several hotels in which she lived and paid with fake checks, as well as numerous acquaintances, at whose expense she flew to Italy and even wanted to buy a building in Manhattan.

The heroine did not admit her guilt and claimed that she went to prison by mistake. She also believed that she could earn and repay all her debts.

What is now with Anna Sorokina

The court sentenced the swindler to four years in prison. During her imprisonment, she blogged and talked about her life behind bars.

In February last year, Anna Sorokina was released early for good behavior, restored her social media accounts and continues to share details of her life. Now more than 250 thousand followers are subscribed to Anna Delvi’s Instagram.
