Last week post on InstagramLinda Evangelists caused a real shock among netizens. The supermodel admitted that was disfigured by a fat reduction procedure called CoolSculptingwhich had the exact opposite effect on her: instead of reducing the amount of fat she had, CoolSculpting increased it.

According to the Evangelists, she developed paradoxical fatty hyperplasia, in which the tissue in the treated area increases in size, hardens and remains the same. It looks like a piece of butter hidden under the skin.

PJG not only deprived me of my livelihood, but also plunged me into deep depression, sadness and caused self-loathing,

– wrote the Evangelista.

The star has filed a lawsuit against Zeltiq Aesthetics Inc., an Allergan subsidiary that sells CoolSculpting machines. The model claims that the company deliberately concealed the risks of the procedure, and the specialists did not properly warn about the consequences.

What is CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting is a cosmetic procedure designed to destroy fat cells at the surface of the skin by cooling them. The process is known as cryolipolysis.

This technique was first proposed in 2008.… It is based on several observations: a rare phenomenon called popsicle panniculitis. It manifests itself when children suck ice cream, permanent pits form on their cheeks, due to the cold, which damages the fat cells. The second phenomenon doctors noticed in 1980, when women rode horses in freezing weather, they lost fat in the thighs.

It should be noted that CoolSculpting is not a panacea for weight loss… This method is only good for killing stubborn fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise. Moreover, patients should have an ideal body weight.

How the process works

CoolSculpting can only be done under license from Zeltiq Aesthetics after a doctor’s appointment – dermatologist, plastic surgeon. First, the specialist applies the gel to the skin, then the apparatus with a vacuum attachment draws in the fat fold and cools it down to -11 ° C. Areas of concern include the chin, abdomen, thighs, arms, back, knees, and buttocks.

Exposure to cold triggers the reaction of apoptosis (breakdown of fat cells), they break down into acids, after which other cells absorb the resulting apoptotic bodies, are naturally processed and removed from the body.

– said the cosmetologist Lyudmila Gaidamaka.

Over the next 1-6 months, the fat cells die. Beauty salons promise to reduce fat in the treated areas by about 20%, and after several treatments even by 40-50%. The cost varies within 10 thousand hryvnia.

Why CoolSculpting is popular

Compared to surgical fat removal methods such as liposuction, CoolSculpting does not require a long rehabilitation period. After the procedure, you can go to the gym, go for walks and travel.

CoolSculpting risks

During the procedure itself, patients may feel discomfort: tightness due to vacuum, cold can cause discomfort, tingling, redness, swelling, bruising, pain, cramps, itching.

Manufacturers include rare side effects: frostbite, hernia, dizziness, or pain for several weeks.

Linda Evangelista’s PJG is cited by the manufacturer as another rare side effect. However, studies by Canadian scientists have shown that these risks are reduced if the latest models are used. According to them, only 1 case in 2000 people can be negative. In comparison with the devices of outdated models, this figure will be – 1 case out of 666.

As soon as patients develop an adverse the effect of PJG, it needs to be treated with surgery – liposuction. But surgery may not fix the problem or cause new ones to appear. Actually, as happened with the Evangelist.

Contraindications

The most important thing to pay attention to before any procedure is contraindications:

  • pregnancy, lactation period;
  • oncological diseases;
  • inflammatory diseases accompanied by increased body temperature;
  • diseases of the kidneys and liver in the stage of decompensation, hepatitis B and C;
  • obesity;

I want to note that problems with the thyroid gland are also a contraindication. And, according to the Seti, Linda had them,

– said cosmetologist Lyudmila Gaidamaka.

After careful study of the issue, it is impossible to say for sure how safe or dangerous the procedure is. Everyone should choose individually, and most importantly – approach the study of the issue very carefully. This also applies to the choice of a clinic, a doctor, the study of documents, contraindications, the correct preparation for the procedure itself.
