Died director of the legendary series “Slave Izaura”

Milton Gonçalves, one of the creators of the cult Brazilian television series Slave Isaura, has died at the age of 88.

Brazilian actor and director Milton Gonçalves passed away on Monday, May 30. The general public became aware of the death of the filmmaker only on Wednesday, June 1.

According to the Globo TV channel, with which the director worked closely for a long time, he said that Gonçalves passed away at his home. The cause of the director’s death was the consequences of an ischemic stroke, suffered two years ago.

Goncalves became famous all over the world thanks to the television series “Slave Izaura”. Brazilian melodrama has become very popular not only in his homeland, but also far beyond its borders. The series received a lot of attention in the post-Soviet space.

The director was called one of the most influential African-American cultural figures. He fought for the rights of blacks and was actively involved in civic activities.

Goncalves is survived by his wife Oda and three children – two daughters and a son, Mauricio, who followed in his father’s footsteps and is also an actor.
