(ANSA) – ROME, OCTOBER 26 – 23 cities have submitted the application file including title, cultural project, body responsible for the project, economic and financial sustainability assessment and objectives pursued. Applications will be evaluated by a commission composed of 7 experts from the world of culture, arts, territorial development and tourism, which will be established shortly by decree of the Minister. By January 18, 2022, the commission will examine the applications and select the 10 finalist projects that will be invited to public hearings that will take place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture by March 1, 2022. By March 15, 2022, the commission will propose to Minister of Culture the candidacy deemed most suitable to be awarded the title of Italian Capital of Culture for the year 2024.
The 23 candidate cities: 1. Ala (Trento). 2. Aliano (Matera). 3. Ascoli Piceno. 4. Asolo (Treviso). 5. Burgio (Agrigento). 6. Capistrano (Vibo Valentia).
7. Chioggia (Venice). 8. Conversano with the metropolitan area of Bari (Bari). 9. Diamante (Cosenza). 10. Gioia dei Marsi (L’Aquila). 11. Grosseto. 12. La Maddalena (Sassari). 13.
Mesagne (Brindisi). 14. Pesaro (Pesaro and Urbino). 15. Pordenone.

The title of Italian Capital of Culture is awarded for a period of one year and the winning city will receive one million euros. In previous years the title was awarded to the cities of Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia, Ravenna and Siena in 2015; Mantua in 2016; Pistoia in 2017, Palermo in 2018, Parma in 2020 which was extended to 2021 by the Relaunch Decree. The same decree proclaimed, as a sign of solidarity for the victims of the pandemic, Bergamo and Brescia as Italian Capitals of Culture for 2023. In 2022 the capital will be Procida. (HANDLE).
