When the announcement was made and images of our faces were released, I was the most attacked person in the entire series. There was the “n-word”, I was told that I was too black, too fat. I received a polite message: “I’m sure you’re a wonderful actress and a lovely person. It’s just that you shouldn’t do that, it’s not right. Send your resignation letter to Amazon, I would appreciate it.” I said to myself that I was not going to do this, I am not going to quit for you, unfortunately I am here to stay.
I realized that my place in this series is a challenge against the fact that none of this is true. We have our place on screens and in fictional universes. I realized that for my daughter, the film industry and our generation, I had to take this power and this light, do everything I can with my character […] I went through all the stages of mourning by reading some messages. Then I understood my mission, to help people understand, to embrace them and to love them. We don’t neglect a child who is scared, they are scared, they are scared because they haven’t seen us before.
At that time and throughout the series, I made it my mission to quell their fear. Make them understand that it does not matter, that it is possible to tell a story. We are here and the series is better off for it, as is the film industry and our world.
